INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE PREMIER: “THE RESCUE” A FILM BY INVISIBLE CHILDREN

International Day of Peace: Monday, September 21
Complimentary cocktail hour beginning at 7pm
Screening (35 minutes) beginning at 8pm

PressitOn Art Gallery:
Design District, 4100 North Miami Avenue, Miami, Fl. 33127

Six years ago, three aspiring American filmmakers journeyed to Northern Uganda in the hopes of cutting their teeth on a documentary about elusive rebel leader Joseph Kony and his guerrilla Lord's resistance Army (LRA) whose reign of terror spanned nearly two decades. When the trio witnessed first-hand, however, the misery and brutality endured by the tens of thousands of child soldiers conscripted by the LRA, their quest took a slightly different path. Today, several films, a global following, and appearances on Oprah and Larry King Live later – to name but a few recent accolades – Invisible Children and its founders are more dedicated than ever to bringing Africa's longest-running war to an end and its smallest victims home.

Beginning next month, armed with its latest and most controversial film to date, The Rescue of Joseph Kony's Child Soldiers, Invisible Children will embark on a world tour in the hopes of inciting a generation to action.

On September 21, in observance of the United Nation's International Day of Peace, Miami Arts and Design District's PressitOn USA will host the South Florida premier of The Rescue, a compelling, 35-minute movie that offers a harrowing look at the rebel leader and his vicious reign with chilling testimonies from child soldiers.

We cordially invite you to join the Miami Arts and Design District Community and the crew from Invisible Children for an unforgettable experience. Do your part for peace.

One on One with Dr. Gioia Gabellieri Bargagli, PHD

What is cinematherapy? Cinema puts us in touch with the deepest roots of our identity. A film can hold up a mirror in which we can discover our true face and break out of the mental ruts which constrain us to endlessly repeat the same errors. In her book 'The Images Behind the Emotions: the Archetypes and the Power of Myth in Cinema', Gioia Gabellieri Bargagli takes us on a guided tour of the film trilogy 'Lord of the Rings' and films by directors from all over the world, and invites us to examine a number of Jungian archetypes with which we identify, thus revealing the capacity of cinema to assist the spectator along a voyage of self-discovery."

Lighting Their Fires(Viking, $24.95)

Thursday, September 17, 7pm
Books & Books, Coral Gables

Presented in collaboration with Arts for Learning as part of its Wonders of Teaching program

In his bestselling book, Teach Like Your Hair’s on Fire, readers were introduced to Rafe Esquith and his extraordinary students in Hobart Elementary School’s Room 56. Using his amazing and inspiring classroom techniques, Esquith has helped thousands of children learn to maximize their potential.
In LIGHTING THEIR FIRES, Esquith shows that children aren’t born extraordinary; they become that way as a result of parents and teachers who instill values that serve them not just in school, but for the rest of their lives. Whether he is highlighting the importance of time management or offering a step-by-step discussion of how children can become good decision makers, Esquith shows how parents can equip their kids with all the tools they need to find success and have fun in the process. Using examples from classic films and great books, he stresses the value of sacrifice, the importance of staying true to oneself, and the danger that television can pose to growing young minds.

LIGHTING THEIR FIRES is that rarest of education books: one that explains not just how to make our children great students, but how to make them thoughtful and honorable people.

About the Author

Rafe Esquith has taught at Hobart Elementary School in Los Angeles for twenty-four years. He is the only teacher to have been awarded the president’s National Medal of the Arts. His many other honors and awards include the American Teacher Award, Parents magazine As You Grow Award, Oprah Winfrey’s Use Your Life Award TM, and People magazine’s Heroes Among Us Award. Meet Sue Monk Kidd and Ann Kidd Taylor Discussing and Signing

Meet Sue Monk Kidd and Ann Kidd Taylor
discussing and signing
Traveling with Pomegranates (Viking, $25.95)

Thursday, September 24, 7:30pm
Coral Gables Congregational Church
3010 De Soto Boulevard (across the street from the Biltmore Hotel)
Presented in collaboration with Florida Center for the Literary Arts

Sue Monk Kidd became a household name with her New York Times bestselling novel, The Secret Life of Bees, which has sold over 6 million copies to date. Since then, Fox Searchlight Pictures released a box-office hit movie based on the novel, featuring a star-studded cast, and her second novel, The Mermaid Chair, reached the number one spot on the New York Times hardcover fiction bestseller list. But before this whirlwind, from 1998 to 2000, when Sue had just published Dance of the Dissident Daughter and the idea for Bees was just an image in her head, Sue traveled around the world with her daughter, Ann Kidd Taylor. Each woman was at a crossroads in her life, and together they undertook a journey to redefine and rediscover themselves.
Part travel story, part spiritual quest and part induction into feminine passages, TRAVELING WITH POMEGRANATES is a memoir told in two voices. Set against the awe-inspiring backdrops of France and Greece, this intersecting autobiography chronicles an intimate mapping of two women—a fifty something and a twenty-something, a mother and daughter—each about to enter new and different life stages. Sue, painfully aware of aging, struggles to hang on to herself as change surrounds her. Ann, newly graduated from college and heartbroken by the sudden end of her long-term relationship, not to mention a cold rejection from her graduate school of choice, is benumbed by the classic question about what to do with her life.

Over the course of their travels, the two women discover a new and respectful intimacy, forging a new bond. Candid, deeply personal and mindful of the symbolism all around them, Sue and Ann’s account is moving and unique. A book about myth, place, inspiration, confidence, and discovering who you are, TRAVELING WITH POMEGRANATES will resonate with mothers and daughters everywhere, and just about anyone who has ever faced change head on.

The Greek myth of Demeter and Persephone and mother-daughter estrangement and reunion serves as a foundation for the book, and provides the title’s reference to the famous fruit. A personal and modern reconfiguration of the myth, both women feel lost to each other and to themselves. As Ann, struggling with a depression she can barely admit to herself, drifts away, Sue tries to find a way to reach out to her while respecting her space and individuality. Meanwhile, Sue, who had just published Dance of the Dissident Daughter, is feeling the call of a new kind of creativity, and she admits to herself, finally, that she wants to write fiction. She wonders whether this vision she’s had of bees coming out of the crack of the ceiling in a young girl’s room has any value.

Like Sue’s other work, TRAVELING WITH POMEGRANATES has a spiritual core. Both Sue and Ann are on a quest, and reach out to feminine symbols for strength along the way: Sue finds comfort in the Virgin Mary, in all her shapes and forms, and Ann clings to her Athena ring, purchased on a previous trip to Greece and a reminder of the goddess’s strength and wisdom.

About the Authors

Sue Monk Kidd’s first novel, The Secret Life of Bees, has spent more than 100 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. She is also the author of several acclaimed memoirs and the recipient of numerous literary awards. Sue lives beside a salt marsh near Charleston, South Carolina, with her husband.

Ann Kidd Taylor is a graduate of Columbia College. She has written personal essays for Skirt! Magazine in Charleston, South Carolina where she lives with her husband and son. This is her first book.

Shifting Constructs:Cifo 2009 Grants & Commissions Program Exhibition

Shifting Constructs:

cifo 2009 Grants & Commissions Program Exhibition
September 13- November 8, 2009 5pm

Featuring the work of:
Commission Recipients
Dora Longo Bahia (Brazil)
Oscar Muñoz (Colombia)
Grant Recipients
Miguel Amat (Venezuela)
Gabriel Antolínez (Colombia)
Suwon Lee (Venezuela)
Juan León (Ecuador)
Ricardo Réndon (Mexico)
José Ruiz (Peru)
The Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation presents Shifting Constructs, its 2009 Grants and Commissions Programs exhibition. The exhibition presents new work from the award recipients of both programs in one single exhibition, which represents a unique opportunity for a dynamic dialogue between artists of different generations, in one single platform.
As in the previous grant cycles, the artists for this exhibition were not selected based on a specific curatorial structure. Instead, the highly innovative work is a culmination of a year-long process during which artists are nominated and chosen among hundreds of proposals to develop and produce new work to share with audiences in Miami. Only after this chance happening of sorts is created does a common link between the pieces in the exhibition become evident and the striking dialogue between works surfaces.
The title of the show, Shifting Constructs, alludes to a common practice among all the work in the exhibition of remaking, re-approaching, questioning and manipulating established paradigms of history, ideas, materials and images. The artists presented explore themes such as maps, identity, memory and archives, among others, through an exciting combination of video, installation, photography, sound and drawing. As Elvis Fuentes articulates in his essay, The Art of Suspicion, published in the forthcoming extended brochure, the artists in this exhibition confront such themes "from a point of view that is both diaphanous and searching." This inquisitive approach common to all the works illustrates a constant shift of perceptions and ideas in to a forum where new possibilities of questioning are established.

Panamerican Art Projects presents Gustavo Acosta and Carlos González

Left: Gustavo Acosta. The Glass Shield. 2009. Acrylic on canvas. 96" x 64". Right: Carlos González. Finding light. 2009. Stainless steel. 72" x 86" x 80"

Panamerican Art Projects presents Gustavo Acosta and Carlos González

Opening Reception: September 12th, 2009. 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Location: Panamerican Art Projects. 2450 NW 2nd Avenue. Miami, FL 33127

Dates: From September 5th through October 3rd, 2009

Admission: Free

Flying was a dream and an obsession for centuries until the airplane was invented. Although now we are able to fly assisted by mechanical devices, we still look at birds in a mix of wonder and envy. As a result, wings are seen as the means of transforming, and flying as the ultimate metaphor for freedom, the image of total liberation. In art history there any many examples of artists who have been inspired by the act of flying and as a consequence reflected it on their works.

Here we have two contemporary Cuban artists whose works are connected to this idea: Gustavo is using it as a resource for his paintings and Carlos is more interested in the actual possibility of flying, translating this interest to his sculptures.

The Great Systems - Gustavo Acosta

The idea of being constantly watched drove him to paint what seem like views seen through night vision goggles. These images looked like they were made by somebody who went around while everybody was sleeping and registered what he saw. While experimenting in this direction Gustavo started to play with the color green and the infinite possibilities that it offered. This led him to use the color as a filter, as if he was permanently looking at his surroundings through a green glass. The result is this group of paintings in which he has ‘softened’ the color in a more even tone, getting farther away from the goggles effect and giving the impression of an image captured when the light had a rare diffusion.

Secret codes

In this series of works Gustavo is exploring night views in which he shows us how cities are mapped out by their lights reflected against the dark background of a starry night, almost like electric Nazca lines. There is a sense of abstraction with pure color points made of light dots, the pitch black background emphasizing the emptiness between the ground and the air.

Flights of Fancy - Carlos González’s sculptures

In this new group of sculptures Carlos González continues exploring the natural world yet with a clear departure from his last solo exhibition a couple of years ago. His hard angular forms have dissipated, giving space to more organic and voluptuous pieces. While the previous works reminded us of insects, these new ones are inspired by birds and connected elements such as seeds and flowers. Carlos keeps looking at nature for inspiration and these pieces are his very personal interpretations of it. Seemingly mimicking wings and plants he is bringing to light the overlapping of nature, science and flying devices that seem ready to take off. While the works look like mechanical artifacts, there is still the poetry of nature. The monumentality of his work is balanced by the delicacy and intricacy of each piece, part of a complicated yet delicate oeuvre.
