16th Annual Celebrity Chefs Food Tasting and Auction at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida

16th Annual Celebrity Chefs Food Tasting and Auction on Friday, September 25, 2009

At the beautiful Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida

This event features South Florida’s premiere chefs offering gourmet delicacies to delight the palates of all who attend. This year we are pleased to welcome back many of the veteran chefs, as well as several newcomers, many of whom are considered the best in South Florida. The evening also includes a fine array of silent auction items for guests to purchase and the opportunity to support our scholarship campaign with our “Bids for Kids.”

All proceeds will benefit the children, adults, and families served by the Ann Storck Center. For over fifty years, the Center has gone beyond the boundaries of advanced medical and therapeutic care to foster learning, independence and self-worth for our children and adults with special needs as well as provide support and guidance for their families. The preschool, residential and developmental training programs are all accredited and recognized for their exceptional quality of services in our community, around the state and by CARF (the Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission). The love and care provided by the Center ensures that those in need can find hope. But we could not do it without the generosity of those who support our efforts.

“This event has become the cornerstone of the Ann Storck Center’s ability to continue to provide qualitative interventions for the children and adults who depend on us every day,” said Jim McGuire, executive director of the Ann Storck Center. “The generous support of so many people allows us to help fund the programs and services required by those we serve.”

Restore Yourself with Edy Greenblatt's Workshop at Books & Books

Meet
Edy Greenblatt, Ph.D.
and participate in her workshop
Restore Yourself!: The Antidote to Professional Exhaustion
($19.95)

Thursday, September 3, 8pm
Books & Books, Coral Gables

Presented in collaboration with the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce

The results of great organizational strategies and tactics often remain unrealized because committed employees lack the energy to do what they know they should do, day in and day out. This Restore Yourself Workshop™ provides the tools to help everyone recognize exactly which circumstances, interactions, and tasks drain their energy—and, what to do to remedy their chronic depletion and become reinvigorated.

Dr. Greenblatt explains in her compelling book, Restore Yourself! The Antidote to Professional Exhaustion, “Many people feel like unwilling participants trapped in a lose-lose game of overwork and fatigue. Some feel they’ve traded financial security and social comfort for chronic exhaustion. Others feel that they have unknowingly signed up to be a responsible, yet miserable worker- or manager-drone. There are also those who pretend that it is okay to exhaust yourself in the name of caring for others while ignoring the reality that if you collapse, everyone will lose.”

Throughout the workshop, Dr. Greenblatt exposes the common misconceptions about our energy levels, including the myths of work-life balance and the strategic use of Personal Resource Management. In this workshop, we confront the flawed belief that we do not have time to get the rest and restoration we need without quitting our jobs, getting a divorce or moving to Costa Rica.

Greenblatt helps participants diagnose precisely which work activities can be extremely energizing for them and the conditions under which non-work activities can be draining and definitely not restorative. At the end of this workshop you will know how to remain resilient in the face of common sneaky depleters, how to build strategic restoration into a work day, how to successfully diagnose and remedy resource losses as they occur. Each participant leaves with an action plan in hand to start making impactful changes immediately.

Opening of the Exhibition Argentine Visions: From Modernism to Contemporary Aesthetics at Cremata Gallery

Cremata Gallery

The gallery is currently closed for the summer and will reopen to the public on September 15th, 2009 for the opening of the exhibition Argentine Visions: from Modernism to Contemporary Aesthetics. This exhibition will feature an exciting collection of acrylics, oils, collages, inks, and watercolors, from the fifties to today. From Italo-Argentine Modernist masters Bruno Venier and Carlo Monzani, who have exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in NYC, to contemporary artists living in Argentina, Cremata Gallery is showcasing 17 artists with very different styles.

Like U. S. art, Argentine art has a strong flavor of the melting pot, that has lately been turning from European influences to its native resources. Many of the paintings and water colors in the show were inspired by the École de Paris, from staid academic works to surrealism. Others are more indigenous.

The opening reception will take place on Sept 18th, 2009 at 7:30 p.m.
Come to the gallery and enjoy Malbec wines, Argentine hors d’oeuvres and a special Tango performance by Claudio y Yanira.

Introducing Tim and Shelly Conners, Premier Guide Miami's Food and Wine Critics

The husband and wife food-writing team of Shelly and Tim Connors serve a recipe for edible prose consisting of a savory mixture of experience, knowledge and a fervent enthusiasm for all things edible. As freelance food and travel writers for digital media formats and as restaurant consultants, this hungry wanderlust duo love to spread the word of fine food and exotic travel.

Tim Connors, a Culinary Institute of America graduate, was a disciple of fusion cuisine inspired by his zeal for exotic travel. His career included cooking for David Burke at Park Avenue Cafe in Manhattan, opening numerous trendy Manhattan restaurants as well as cooking stints in Brazil, Boston and Providence, Rhode Island.

On his days off from the hot Manhattan kitchens, Tim racked up enough hours in a twin engine airplane to follow his dream of becoming a commercial pilot. Flying all over the world has enabled him the opportunity to continue to explore global gastronomy. From Japan, Peru to Africa, Tim borrows from the best food cultures to teach cooking classes and write food reviews on his days off.

In Shelly Connors’ life, fine food was always the central theme. She was probably the only five year old clamoring for her favorite birthday meal of sautéed frog legs and asparagus soufflé. While her parents were international luxury travel advisors, she was privileged to experience different cultures through their culinary traditions.

Early in her career, Shelly was a fragrance and skin care product developer on 5th Ave in Manhattan before she realized she’d rather make edible recipes than recipes developed for the skin. She launched her culinary career as a restaurant public relations and marketing guru and then moved onto hands-on food training at such notable New York institutions like Eli Zabar’s and through a protege of Dean and Deluca.

As she honed her culinary skills, Shelly was hired by Whole Foods Market as a travelling chef trainer and profit prophet. If a Whole Food’s kitchen was fiscally challenged, her financial wizardry could whip their books into shape with two shakes of a whisk. Today, instead of flying for work, she flies for food-she flies all over the world to taste the ‘untasted’ and prefers to write about food. Shelly also delights in teaching others how to cook what she loves to eat in her popular private cooking classes. She is also the owner of a small public relations company based in Naples, Florida.

Premier Guide Miami welcomes the foodie couple, Tim and Shelly to the team.

Ludacris Celebrating His New Cognac CONJURE in Miami

Ludacris Celebrating His New Cognac CONJURE in Miami Photos by Ben Schneider

If I have one more drink, like the song suggested, but this time it will be a concoction with Conjure instead of Hennessey and sprite. Conjure is the new cognac by Chris "Ludacris" Bridges. The new cognac was introduced to the world in June of 2009 in Bordeaux, France and is now making its rounds at the South Florida hot spots.

The three times Grammy award winner, actor, businessman, entrepreneur, musician and philanthropist is currently in Miami Beach promoting Conjure. Chris has been very successful in other areas of his career and is now introducing to his fans one of his other passions.

Conjure is made from the ugui Blanc grape from blends that represent a variety of cognac regions such as Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne and Borderie, to name a few. Conjure is a highly selective blend of thirty to forty beaux-de-vie, aged in Limousin oak barrels that are up to fifty years old. Using these highly seasoned barrels provides an unparalleled complexity of smoothness, definition and flavor.

The next time you visit your favorite South Beach club be sure to get a taste of Conjure. Do have one more drink.

Below are photos of Ludacris with fans and friends celebrating at Grass Lounge Miami. Click here to view more photos.

Writer, Filmmaker, Performance Artist Alberto Ferraras at Books & Books Coral Gables

Meet Alberto Ferraras
Reading and signing
B as in Beauty (Grand Central Publishing, $13.99)

Friday, August 28, 2009 8pm
Books & Books, Coral Gables

Everyone in the world, it seems, is either prettier or thinner (or both) than Beauty Marie Zavala. And the only thing "B" resents more than her name is the way others judge her for the extra 40 pounds she can't lose. At least she has her career. Or did, until she overhears her boss criticizing her weight and devising a scheme to keep her from being promoted. Enter B's new tax accountant, a modern-day matchmaker determined to boost B's flagging self-esteem by introducing her to rich, successful men who will accept her for who she is. As B's confidence blossoms, so do her fantasies of revenge. But will B find true happiness or true disaster when she unwittingly falls for the one guy she shouldn't?
